"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
There is a field.
I will meet you there."

Jelaluddin Rumi - 13th Century Sufi Poet

I am often asked what is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy. For me, bearing in mind the models I use, it is a question of depth.

Integrative counselling

Short-term, and long-term counselling allows me to help clients look at life issues that are current, and are causing emotional fall-out which can be difficult to deal with. Issues such as bereavement, redundancy and breakdown of relationships come to mind.

As an Integrative Counsellor I use a synthesis of various models - Transactional Analysis (TA), Cognitive/Behavioural, Psychodynamic and Humanistic. This allows me to help clients address issues that surface in a creative, warm, challenging and safe environment that is optimum for growth. For example, family of origin dynamics can be explored slowly and carefully, allowing difficult emotional feelings to surface and be re-integrated to help the settling of dis-ease and move towards wholeness. In this way relationships, as they are now, are impacted in a healing way. In other words, by addressing the past we deal with the present.

Transpersonal Psychotherapy

Long-term Transpersonal Psychotherapy allows a deeper examination of the root causes of emotional disturbance in a way that short-term and long-term Counselling are possibly not suited to. Deep life issues can be addressed such as questions around the meaning of life that can be difficult to approach in a materialistic, industrialised society. That this is done in a safe and caring relationship is vital for us if we are to be helped to grow.

Issues of a spiritual nature can be safely approached in a manner that is sometimes not possible in a blame-and-shame culture that is deeply intolerant of others. In this there is the potential to move beyond the personal and raise awareness towards areas that are beyond the rational mind. I also use sound and music if the client and myself feel that it is appropriate.

Having been a Yogi for 11 years, I am also studying Yoga Philosophy with a view towards a transpersonal model based on this Philosophy. It was towards this end that I did the BWY Foundation Course in 2006.
